Pattern of Post-Juvenile Moult in Common Snipe (Gallinago Gallinago) and Its Implications for Ageing of the Species

External ageing of Common Snipe (Gallinago gallinago) still engenders considerable problems. To improve precision of age determination on the basis of plumage characteristics a scheme of post-juvenile moult was investigated in approximately 1200 first-year Common Snipes caught during autumn migration in central Poland. Post-juvenile moult was commenced from body feathers followed by moult of rectrices, lesser/median wing coverts and tertials. Moult sequence showed high inter-individual variability and was started in rectrices (36.9%), wing coverts (25.3%), tertials (8.4%) or simultaneously in several of these tracts of feathers (29.4%). Moult of rectrices was finished before completion of moult of wing coverts and tertials. Moult of tertials finished as the last from all age-indicative tracts of feathers. Consequently, tertials were suggested as the most useful for ageing of first-year Common Snipes in an advanced stage of moult. There was no case of moult of the outermost tertial in first-year birds. The second tertial from distal side of wing was moulted as the last one within this tract of feathers and thereby should be of special interest during plumage examination

Ants inhabiting stumps on clearcuts in managed forest in western Poland

We studied ant communities living in stumps left on clearcuts. The clearcuts were located in a managed forest in western Poland. Depending on the study site, 10-80% of the stumps were inhabited by ant colonies. Lasius platythorax was the dominant of the community. We found the diameter of the stump to be positively related with the occurrence of some ant species. In general, oak and pine stumps were inhabited in a similar proportion. Formica fusca, however, showed a distinct preference for oaks. All species avoided each other with exception of F. fusca which preferred all species other than L. platythorax. We did not find the presence of red wood ants to significantly affect the occurrence of ant colonies in these stumps. The results of our investigations indicate that stumps left on clearcuts are convenient nest site for ants. Leaving stumps affects positively the growth of the L. platythorax population

The title complex, [Mo(C15H22BN6)(C7H7O)2(NO)], contains an {MoNO}4 core stabilized by κ3-hydrotris(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)borate, [TpMe2]−, and two anionic m-cresolate ligands, leading to a distorted octahedral geometry for the Mo atom. The short Mo—O bond lengths [1.935 (2) and 1.971 (2) Å], as well as large Mo—O—Csp 2 angles [134.2 (2) and 143.54 (19)°], indicate dπMo—pπO interactions, which are clearly weaker when compared with {Mo(NO)(TpMe2)} alkoxides. The nitrosyl system is virtually linear [179.3 (3)°] with Mo—N and N—O bond lengths of 1.760 (2) and 1.205 (3) Å, respectively. Intra- and intermolecular C—H(Ph or CH3)⋯π(Ph) interactions between adjacent phenyl rings are found in the crystal structure (d H⋯Ph in the range 2.743–2.886 Å). One of the Ph rings shows disorder, i.e. swinging in the ring plane

Over the last few years, the huge rise in various computer vision applications canbe observed. They are widely used in such areas like video surveillance, medicaldiagnostics, biometrics recognition, the automotive or military industries. Mostof these solutions take advantage of high-resolution cameras in order to obtainhigh quality images. Surprisingly, little attention is paid in the literature tothe practical implementation of off-the-shelf image acquisition systems. Mostavailable solutions are composed of custom developed electronic devices whichuse specialized multi-core DSPs and / or FPGA technology. Therefore, in thispaper the novel realization of the scalable and comprehensive image acquisitionsystem based on synchronized high resolution Gigabit Ethernet camerasis presented. The proposed solution allows the connection of multiple camerastogether with any number of external illumination modules. Selected devicescan be synchronized with each other in user-defined configurations. Hence, designed solution can be easily integrated in both simple and complex applications.Authors describe in detail design and implementation processes of theproposed platform. The performance issues that can occur in such systems arepresented and discussed. Obtained results are encouraging and useful for thedevelopment of similar solutions

FetalNet: Multi-task Deep Learning Framework for Fetal Ultrasound Biometric Measurements

In this paper, we propose an end-to-end multi-task neural network called FetalNet with an attention mechanism and stacked module for spatio-temporal fetal ultrasound scan video analysis. Fetal biometric measurement is a standard examination during pregnancy used for the fetus growth monitoring and estimation of gestational age and fetal weight. The main goal in fetal ultrasound scan video analysis is to find proper standard planes to measure the fetal head, abdomen and femur. Due to natural high speckle noise and shadows in ultrasound data, medical expertise and sonographic experience are required to find the appropriate acquisition plane and perform accurate measurements of the fetus. In addition, existing computer-aided methods for fetal US biometric measurement address only one single image frame without considering temporal features. To address these shortcomings, we propose an end-to-end multi-task neural network for spatio-temporal ultrasound scan video analysis to simultaneously localize, classify and measure the fetal body parts. We propose a new encoder-decoder segmentation architecture that incorporates a classification branch. Additionally, we employ an attention mechanism with a stacked module to learn salient maps to suppress irrelevant US regions and efficient scan plane localization. We trained on the fetal ultrasound video comes from routine examinations of 700 different patients. Our method called FetalNet outperforms existing state-of-the-art methods in both classification and segmentation in fetal ultrasound video recordings.Comment: Accepted to 28th International Conference on Neural Information Processing (ICONIP) 2021, Bali, Indonesia, 8-12 December, 202
